Designer Natalie Bradburn of Clean Clean Clean recently launched a range of bathroom accessories in organic shapes and poppy colours. “I really wanted to start thinking in a new way, and bring colour to a largely black-and-white scene,” she says.

Why did you start making bathroom products?
Bathrooms work incredibly hard and they are one of the most complicated rooms in the house – I find them endlessly fascinating. Yet often they are designated the bare minimum of space, and the uninspiring spread of fittings available on the market bores me.

What are yours made of and why?
Powder-coated aluminium because it doesn’t rust, which is really important in a wet space, and because it’s recyclable. I get them made in Whanganui by some amazing manufacturers.

Why are most bathroom things really naff?
Having to squeeze so much into the smallest room in the house has made it a Tetris game, so the parts have become very standard. The real-estate market plays a hand too – the sofa goes when you move out but the vanity stays.

What comes next for Clean Clean Clean?
There are so many other products I’d like to make and spaces I’d like to create. I want to keep working with a research focus, and really get stuck into thinking about every element in the bathroom.
