Much more than a wall finish, plaster brings an inviting tactile quality to a surprising variety of surfaces.

There’s been a distinct shift to softer, more-organic interiors in recent years: even the most minimalist of homes now has a warmth, an increase in texture. Possibly, it’s our post-pandemic world – a need to feel warm and secure – or possibly, it’s part of a longer-term reaction to cold, flat spaces.

“Polished sterile surfaces are being replaced with more-tactile finishes,” says Ambitec creative director Wendy Nannestad, “adding to the warm minimalist look. Clean lines, no clutter and a sense of calm.” Ambitec’s range of polished plasters fits the bill nicely here: coming in a range of textures, from rough to smooth, and in a variety of colours (with bespoke options available).

It’s also increasingly used on surfaces other than walls – on cabinetry in kitchens, bathrooms and wardrobes. The result blurs the line between kitchen, dining and living. “There has been a subtle shift in how kitchens are showcased within spaces, becoming less of an obvious hero but more of an extension of the home,” says Nannestad, “where kitchen cabinetry becomes part of the house.” Elsewhere, rendered cabinetry softens the lines between wardrobes and walls, for instance.

There are a few practical considerations – so getting your cabinetmaker on board with the process early is key. It shouldn’t be used behind a gas hob, you’ll need to decide the level of texture you want, and whether you want handles or push-to-open. And, if you’re using it in a kitchen or a bathroom, it must be coated with a clear surface sealer for cleaning and to prevent the staining from cooking oils and dirty fingerprints. These things aside, it’s a winner. “It helps to create the appearance of a seamless, calm and more uniform space,” says Nannestad.
