Open Home Tairua

Our Open Home series continues with an award-winning show-stopper at Tairua.

Sitting high on Mount Paku above Tairua is a small purple A-frame, which in some light looks silver and at other times looks lilac but at all times intrigues locals and visitors alike.

The house was designed by Glamuzina Architects for and in conjunction with Natalie Parke of Dessein Parke – a collaboration that has produced something really quite extraordinary. It has outstanding views and a dramatic monochromatic blue interior – and not surprisingly, it won the New House category in our recent Here Awards.

Inspired alternately by Fire Island modernism and 1970s A-frames, it celebrates verticality, with a layered plan and plenty of nooks to escape to. “I’ve always been interested in how the roof form defines the space inside,” says architect Dom Glamuzina. “You can have quite a small footprint but use the volume inside the roof to provide changes in scale.”

It’s a brave little house, with a use of colour and form that is rare in this country – we look forward to seeing you there.
