The humble mat is something of a workhorse around the home – it could even be considered essential in the rainier months. So why not make it look good as well? Enter the Joni Wool Mat from Città, designed by Imogen Tunnicliffe and available in a variety of sizes and rich colours.
In developing the mat, Tunnicliffe looked to the 1960s and 1970s for inspiration. “We decided to make them really warm and textural, and this inspired the colour decisions,” she says. “I started thinking about heavy textures in the 70s, and the colours that people used in their living rooms, which were often really rich, saturated, earthy tones – and often quite tonal combinations.”
Handmade in a distinctive popcorn-style weave with plain-weave edging on the short ends, and a sturdy cotton backing, the Joni is produced in a small, family-owned factory in India that has worked with Città for years. The mats are GoodWeave certified, which guarantees high levels of craftsmanship, quality and industry integrity; it also ensures the well-being of the weavers and upholds a zero-tolerance policy for child or forced labour.
The design is available in five colours and three sizes, providing an effortless way to add warmth and colour throughout the home. The smaller sizes, notes Tunnicliffe, are perfect for the front door, while the two larger sizes might sit in front of a French door or work well in smaller, high-use spaces like kitchens, laundries and bathrooms. They also offer a pleasant way to step out of bed on a winter’s morning. “Everyone has different spaces to fill and the three sizes are quite versatile,” the designer says.
