ClassiCon is a German brand based in a minimalist concrete building in Munich: since 1990 the brand has bridged its classic and contemporary pieces with a thoughtful, modernist approach.
Originally based on licences for classic pieces by the likes of Eileen Gray and Otto Blümel, ClassiCon soon branched out to work with contemporary designers including Sebastian Herkner and Konstantin Grcic. There is a seamless connection between new and old: a new piece looks like it’s always been there; an old design has as much currency now as it did decades ago. Regardless, they are pieces to collect for life.
New pieces from the brand include the Bell High Table by Sebastian Herkner, an extension of the glass Bell Table. Originally designed in 2012, and later expanded to include side and coffee tables, each piece is hand-blown into a wooden mould, a technique usually reserved for much smaller pieces, and which gives a unique, hand-made feel, with bubbles and unevenness. It’s deceptively robust – but appears lightweight, even floating.
Also coming soon is the Matéria Low Board series by German designer Christian Haas. Originally an experiment, it soon expanded to a trio in three different sizes and two materials – a travertine top and maple base. With an interplay between its minimalist, smooth lines and the natural variation of travertine marble, it’s a warm, engaging piece of design that will last for years to come.
