CittΓ  makes itself at home in Kirikiriroa with a market-fresh fitout.

Made Market opened in East Hamilton in 2023 – the latest piece of urban regeneration from Matt and Jaimee Stark, of Stark Property. The couple worked with Edwards White Architects to overhaul a dated 1990s office block, transforming it into an urban precinct with a mixture of retail spaces and small eateries.

‍

In doing so, they took a pragmatic approach, creating a market feel that could change and grow over time. β€œWe realised early on that we couldn’t attack everything,” architect Dan Smith told us when it opened, β€œso we stripped it right back and then worked out the key gathering points.” With a mixture of raw concrete structures and softer timber partitions, the place was an immediate success, showing that the residents of Kirikiriroa are hungry for meaningful, independent business.

‍

Most recently, the furniture brand CittΓ  has moved in, taking an anchor tenancy on the ground floor. Mindful of the market-like aesthetic, the brand’s product designer David Moreland sought to be a friendly neighbour. β€œI was immediately curious about how we could create a fitout that honoured both the Made aesthetic and the CittΓ  brand,” says Moreland. β€œFusing these two identities became the core of the design brief.”

‍

Conceived in collaboration with Alexander Wastney from Designwell, the concept came together as two loose zones, anchored by a generous central counter and featuring standalone shelving as well as room setups. β€œIt was apparent that CittΓ  needed to lean into Made’s cedar market-stall framing,” says Moreland, β€œwhich was a feature that ultimately set the tone for the entire fitout.”
