Martino Gamper is an Italian designer based in London with some close connections to Aotearoa and who has a mild obsession with, among other things, chairs.
In 2007, he created 100 chairs in 100 days, which later turned into a book and touring exhibition. In this country he’s probably best known for his Arnold Circus Stool, originally designed for the rejuvenation of a public square at Arnold Circus in Shoreditch, London and which has since been featured in its own book.
Endlessly versatile, light and colourful, it has found its home in kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and outdoor areas ever since. (We’re not sure there has been a single issue of Here that hasn’t featured one.)
In a similar vein of useful whimsy, Gamper has now designed the Hookalotti, a hook for all things. It’s heavy duty and zinc die cast in New Zealand with a rumbled finish. Practical yet decorative, good for everything from tote bags to umbrellas (you could hang your coat on it, but that would cover it up), it’s the kind of thing you didn’t know you needed until you have one.
