Step Right Up

Whether it’s used as a stool, stairs or storage, this versatile piece is a real crowd-pleaser.

Lowercase furniture studio has put a playful spin on a practical piece with this happy wee step. Made in collaboration with online kids’ boutique The Library Store, the versatile stool is designed to give kids a leg up in the kitchen, bathroom and around the home – but would make an equally sound fort wall, tea party table or dinosaur cave. Here, lowercase co-founders Tate Watson and Sam Taylor tell us a bit more.

Here: How did the collaboration come about?

Sam: When we released our tic-tac-toe steps, Olivia [Coote] was one of the first people to buy one. Her son Paco put the step through its paces, using it in the kitchen, the bathroom – all over the place. When she took over The Library Store with Rosie Coker, they wanted to stock the step but put their unique take on it.

Tell us a bit about the step.

Tate: It’s made of solid ash – a beautiful, strong, durable timber. The colour-blocked steps give it a playful aesthetic while the leg joints connect in a really fun way. Originally, I designed the step for Sam. She’s somewhat vertically challenged, and I got sick of her always asking me to get things out of the cupboard. It quickly became the most used piece of furniture in our house. You can stand on it, sit on it, put stuff on it. What I hadn’t considered was how popular the steps would be with parents of young kids.

Can we talk about the colour?

Sam: It’s Dulux Manfeild. We discussed dusky pinks and baby blues, but we landed on green as it’s a bit of a crowd-pleaser.

How’s the feedback been from the little critics?

Sam: Bathroom mirrors are finally at eye height, cookie jars are within reach, and couches are primed for climbing. We’re aiding and abetting kids (under adult supervision, obviously) and loving it.

What else are you working on?

Tate: I’m working on a series of one-off pieces, experimenting with colour and interesting shapes. In the meantime, we’re busy getting our new hire range out into the world.
