Urban TΔmaki Makaurau is in a state of flux: the cityβs fabric is changing rapidly, bringing new typologies and ways of living to a formerly suburban space. At the same time, its older buildings β once overlooked β offer new opportunities for urban living. Neither option involves a 600-square-metre section or expanses of lawn: both celebrate our unique place in the world.
β
On one Saturday in February 2024, in association with our friends at Dulux, weβre opening two very different ways of living in the city β an apartment by Lloyd Hartley Architects and a townhouse by Guy Tarrant Architects.
β
In the gentrifying Britomart area, Ben Lloyd took a tired space in a former Fisher & Paykel warehouse back to its studs, before layering in new materials and fittings that bring in light and celebrate the 80-year-old bones of the formerly industrial building.
β
Meanwhile, in Rangi-mata-rau Point Chevalier, Guy Tarrant designed a courtyard house on a rear site that takes advantage of density rules under the Mixed Housing Suburban Zone of the Auckland Unitary Plan. Using a simple palette of white-painted brick and fine timberwork, Tarrant came up with a design featuring dynamic spaces under a big sheltering roof, with covered outdoor living and a delightful courtyard.
β
We canβt wait to see you there.
