Open Home Hapua St

Join us as we tour two updated modernist classics on a single street in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Hapua Street is something of a modernist show-stopper: there are mid-century classics by many of the country’s greatest architects. In recent years, a number of them have been sensitively altered.

‍

Lucky for you, we’re opening two of the finest on one day in November. There’s the winner of our Reuse and Renovation category in the 2023 Here Awards: a sensitive renovation by Lisa Webb of a house designed by Geoff Newman. Originally an uncompromising fortress of black-stained cedar and white-painted concrete block, Webb has brought in light and free-flowing spaces – and now, a whole new main bedroom suite – without losing any of the magic.

‍

Similarly, Dom Glamuzina has renovated, in stages, a townhouse designed by the celebrated Claude Megson. Megson was known for spaces that were dynamic and light-filled – if slightly flawed. Here, Glamuzina has also carefully turned a small townhouse into a modern family home for his brother and family in a series of deft, wry changes.

‍

Both houses show the joy that comes from altering these houses by being respectful – but not slavishly reverential. We’d love to see you there.
