Hapua Street is something of a modernist show-stopper: there are mid-century classics by many of the countryβs greatest architects. In recent years, a number of them have been sensitively altered.
β
Lucky for you, weβre opening two of the finest on one day in November. Thereβs the winner of our Reuse and Renovation category in the 2023 Here Awards: a sensitive renovation by Lisa Webb of a house designed by Geoff Newman. Originally an uncompromising fortress of black-stained cedar and white-painted concrete block, Webb has brought in light and free-flowing spaces β and now, a whole new main bedroom suite β without losing any of the magic.
β
Similarly, Dom Glamuzina has renovated, in stages, a townhouse designed by the celebrated Claude Megson. Megson was known for spaces that were dynamic and light-filled β if slightly flawed. Here, Glamuzina has also carefully turned a small townhouse into a modern family home for his brother and family in a series of deft, wry changes.
β
Both houses show the joy that comes from altering these houses by being respectful β but not slavishly reverential. Weβd love to see you there.
